With the decline of manufacturing in the early 1980s, Steve embarked on a career in the service industry, recognized as one of the largest growth sectors in the next century. Steve accepted a Regional Manager position with Commercial Property Services, Inc., managing multiple branch locations, while assisting in market development and acquisitions. In addition, Steve also became the President of Commercial Protective Services, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary, providing security services to property owners and managers.

Steve was then recruited by John W. Galbreath Company, a real estate management company, as their Director of Housekeeping Operations. As their Director of Housekeeping Operations, Steve was responsible for an in-house cleaning operation in seven states, totaling 27 million square feet of Class A office space.

International Service Systems, Inc. made Steve their Vice President of the University Division, reporting directly to the CEO. Steve redefined and streamlined the company’s business strategy, and successfully renegotiated customer and employee group contracts to complete a successful business turnaround. Steve also assisted ISS with the acquisition and mergers of new companies purchased by ISS.

In 1987, Facilities Maintenance Management Inc. hired Steve as a Regional Manager. Facilities Maintenance Management, Inc. was a wholly owned subsidiary company of S.C. Johnson Wax. This was a new business start up for Johnson Wax. Steve developed an operating organization structure for new business start-ups and multiple site location management in multiple state operations.

Steve initiated and coordinated the development of field training policies and procedures for the entire operation. As the company began to grow, Steve was promoted to Vice President of Operations. In 1990, Steve was made an Officer and a Director of FMM and named General Manager for the Company, responsible for the overall management of the company.

Steve restructured the organization, achieving a successful business turnaround, while providing S.C. Johnson Wax with a profitable asset, operating in sixteen states with over six hundred employees. Steve positioned the company to be acquired and assisted in the transition of a joint venture partner.
